An update on recycling collections

Here's an update on recycling collections from our Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Nigel Cooke.

"We want to thank our residents for their patience and understanding this week as we have got underway with our new waste and recycling collections.

"Delays with the new waste collection vehicles, problems with introducing a new scheme combined with unprecedented levels of recycling presented at the kerbside has caused significant challenges.

"We appreciate it has been a frustrating time for residents who have embraced the new scheme and taken every effort to recycle as much as they can. We're really sorry for any inconvenience caused.

"Despite these issues our crews have been trying their best, working really hard to get through as many collections as they can and deserve credit for their efforts.

"We would also like to reassure residents that our crews are collecting and separating waste and recycling correctly.

"Due to delays with the new waste collection vehicles, we are using some of our older wagons to complete as many collections as we can. If your recycling is collected using an older vehicle it will be sorted and separated at the recycling depot. Once all of the new waste collection vehicles arrive, separation will always be done at the kerbside."

Putting your bins out

Put your bins, bags, boxes and food caddy at the kerbside by 7am on your collection day. Please make sure they do not block the way for people using pushchairs, wheelchairs or anyone with disabilities. After they have been emptied, bring them back in as soon as you can so they don't get in the way.

Help putting your bins out for collection

We provide a free assisted collection service for residential properties within the Stockton-on-Tees area.

You can request this service if:

  • you find it difficult to move your bins, bags and boxes to the boundary of your property
  • you do not have anyone living in your home to help you

If you have an assisted collection, we will collect and empty your bins, bags, boxes and caddy, then return them to where you left them.

You will need to support your request with the reason why you need an assisted collection. The reason could be because:

  • there is no able bodied person living at your address
  • you are reliant on a carer, who does not live at your address
  • you have a permanent disability
  • you require short term assistance, due to an injury or operation

For further information call the Care for your Area team on 01642 391959 or email careforyourarea@stockton.gov.uk.

Hard-to-reach areas and farms

Hard-to-reach areas and farms have weekly food collections with recycling and general waste collections on alternative weeks. They follow a weekly colour system:

Week one (blue week)Week two (red week)

The weeks will alternate between blue and red, so check your calendar carefully to ensure you present the correct containers each week. You can check your collection day and whether you're a red or blue week by using our postcode checker or by looking at the calendar on the leaflet which was included in your food caddy delivery.

Hard-to-reach areas and farms will only use a white bag for recycling. Put your bins, bag and food caddy at the kerbside by 5am on your collection day.

New dwellings

Developers must give new homes the bins and containers they need for waste and recycling.

They can buy these themselves, but the bins must meet the Council's rules.

If they do not meet these rules, the Council may not be able to collect the waste.

Every new home in the Borough must have:

  • 240L green domestic waste wheeled bin
  • 120L white recycling hessian bag
  • 120L blue recycling hessian bag
  • 55L blue kerbside plastic recycling box
  • 5L internal food waste caddy
  • 23L external food waste caddy
