The Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees

The Mayor for 2026 to 2027 is Councillor Bob Cook. The Mayoress is Sandra Cook. This year's Deputy Mayor is Councillor Marilyn Surtees and the Deputy Mayor's Consort is Charlie Hope-Smith.

The Mayor's duties

The Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees is the first citizen of the Borough and speaks on behalf of the area and its community. A Deputy Mayor assists with civic duties and takes the Mayor's place when he or she is not available. Both the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor choose a Mayoress (or, in the case of a female Mayor, a Consort) to support them in their duties. The Mayor is also a councillor who is elected by fellow councillors to fulfil mayoral duties for one term.

The Mayoral term of office is one year, with elections taking place at the Annual Meeting of the Council each spring. As first citizen, the Mayor acts as Chairperson of the regular meetings of the full Council and holds a casting vote at these meetings.

The Mayor receives many invitations to events and attends as many of them as possible. He or she welcomes royal visitors to the Borough and is often called upon to greet other visitors at the request of schools or other organisations.

The Mayor attends a number of annual functions, including: Annual Meeting and Installation, the annual Community Prayer Service (Mayor's Sunday), the charity Civic Ball and he or she also takes a formal salute at parades to mark the Battle of Britain and Remembrance Sunday.
