How will the works affect me?

As we move through the stages of redevelopment, all efforts will be made to minimise disruption to residents and the businesses in the surrounding town centre.

The Council has worked with businesses and property owners to record the conditions of properties that are in the immediate area to ensure there is no impact on these buildings as a result of the works.

The construction of Stockton Waterfront urban park is continuing at pace.

Construction on two retaining walls is taking place and the paving on the Finkle Square area is beginning to form, showing the first visual signs of the urban park in place.

Major roadworks on A1305 Riverside Road are taking place as part of this development. A land bridge will span A1035 Riverside Road and as part of this, the road is being narrowed and reduced to a single carriageway.

Closure of A1305 Riverside Road from Monday 26 May

The A1305 Riverside Road in Stockton will be closed from 0:01am on Monday 26 May until the work on the park is completed in spring 2026.

Why?

Due to a delay in a utility company undertaking diversions earlier in the year, a full road closure is needed to make sure the project is kept on track for a spring 2026 opening.

Closing Riverside Road presents the best possible opportunity to minimise the length of time on site and is a cost-effective way of managing the delay's impact.

It will also allow for a more efficient way of working across a large, complex site without having to accommodate a live carriageway.

The Riverside Car Park will also be closed.

There are also a number of options to navigate around Stockton, other than the official diversion. This includes Teesdale and the A19.

Waiting times at all traffic lights on the diversion routes will be monitored and temporary waiting restrictions to avoid bottlenecks will be installed. Extensive traffic modelling has taken place to assess traffic flow, these have shown limited impact.

Please leave more time to travel, especially during peak hours.

Access to Quayside Road

Access to Quayside Road is available via Moat Street, through the former Jewson Yard, while the Riverside Road junction is closed.

Buses and taxis

There are no changes to any bus routes or bus stops as a result of this diversion.  Traffic flows will be optimised by relaxing the bus lane restrictions on eastbound Church Yard Link Road.

The Riverside Road taxi rank outside Riverside Lounge will be closed during this time.

Finkle Street paving works

Paving work is taking place on Finkle Street from June 2024, which will begin to show the first visual signs of the urban park in place. The paving works will take place in front of the historic buildings on Finkle Street. Access will be maintained at all times and a footpath diversion will be in place through Green Dragon Yard for access into La Porto.

The work will complement the new Finkle Square in the urban park, which will be the main arrival point from the centre of the High Street.

Closure of Riverside Walk Footpath from Monday 7 October 2024

The Riverside Walk footpath between the Millennium Footbridge and the Riverside Road footbridge will be closed from Monday 7 October.

This will be in place until the completion of the urban park's construction in 2026.

The closure will allow work on the Riverside area of the park to begin, starting with the construction of new drainage along the river's edge and for existing power lines to be moved to allow construction of a new substation that is needed to power the park.

A pedestrian diversion will be in place from Teesdale Business Park to Stockton Town Centre via the Millennium footbridge. An accessible diversion route will also be available via the Princess of Wales Bridge.
