Healthy Schools Programme
The Stockton-on-Tees Healthy Schools Programme is a school improvement tool with an enhanced single focus on health, wellbeing and resilience and can be used as a self-evaluation tool for schools.
The Programme offers a structured framework and practical support to help education settings embed health and wellbeing into everyday practice. The framework is aligned to the Ofsted Inspection Framework and Statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education and is based on a whole school approach encompassing:
- leadership and management
- culture, ethos and environment that promotes respect and values diversity
- curriculum, teaching and learning
- identifying need and monitoring impact
- staff development to support their own wellbeing and that of pupils
- working with families and the community
- enabling pupil voice to influence decisions
- targeted support and appropriate referral
Implementing a whole school approach is a strategic move that can lead to significant improvements in the health and wellbeing of students and staff, ultimately benefiting the entire school community. Key benefits include:
- improved mental health - a whole school approach helps to embed mental health education and support, leading to better mental health outcomes for students
- enhanced academic performance - schools that implement a whole school approach often report improved academic performance and better educational outcomes
- reduced absenteeism - by addressing mental health issues early, schools can reduce absenteeism and improve attendance rates
- positive school climate - a whole school approach fosters a positive school climate, which can lead to a more supportive and engaging learning environment
- community involvement - engaging the entire community, including staff, parents, and external services, creates a supportive network for students' wellbeing
Primary and Secondary Personal Development Networks run half-termly and are aimed at leaders with a particular focus on personal development, health and wellbeing. They are free to attend and open to all schools, whether already actively engaged with the Healthy Schools Programme.
