Work on Durham Lane Cycleways Scheme to begin

Work to create an improved cycle link along Durham Lane in Eaglescliffe to connect key employment sites and surrounding residential areas is set to begin.
The improvements form part of the £20m Levelling Up Fund (LUF) allocation for Yarm and Eaglescliffe, providing infrastructure that provides travel choice.
The new cycle and footway will connect into the existing National Cycle Network route 14 at the A66 junction and with the new Teeslink development to the south.
Contractor CR Reynolds Ltd have been appointed to undertake the works, which will start on site on Monday 12 January 2026.
The work includes the creation of a shared footway-cycleway and a segregated footway and cycle track, between Elton Interchange and the new Eaglescliffe Train Station western car park.
The work will begin just south of the A66 junction, working south in 100m sections. Traffic management will be in place during off-peak hours.
The cycle link is an important piece of regeneration work taking place across a key employment site in the Borough, along with improvements being carried out at Eaglescliffe Station by Tees Valley Combined Authority, and the creation of its new western car park, led by the Council.
And construction work is also now underway on the Teeslink development, north of Durham Lane Industrial Park, a flagship project to unlock a 54-acre site for employment, led by Rula Developments Ltd.
The land was bought by the Council in 2021 using money from Tees Valley Combined Authority's Indigenous Growth Fund.
Councillor Paul Rowling, Cabinet Member for Resources and Transport at Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said: "This is an exciting step in supporting this important employment location to become a growing destination for businesses.
"The creation of a new cycle and walking route along Durham Lane complements the excellent transport links that are nearby, in particular the access enhancements to Eaglescliffe Station. It will also connect communities and employment sites along the route, making it easier to commute, get around and support healthier lifestyles."
Liam Carter, Director at C R Reynolds Ltd, said: "We are pleased to be working with Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council on this pivotal project, which will improve connectivity in the area. This allows us to contribute significantly to enhancing the local infrastructure, ensuring safer and more efficient travel for the community.
"The project will also allow us to further strengthen our relationships with the local supply chain and will provide opportunities to expand our workforce within the region."
Work on the cycleways scheme is set to be complete in Autumn 2026.
