Across Stockton-on-Tees, applications for primary school places for children are now open for those starting school in 2026.

Here are all the key details you need to know.

How do I know this is the correct time to apply for my child's primary school place?

If your child was born between 1 September 2021 and 31 August 2022, they will start primary school in September 2026.

Parents and carers of children due to start primary school in September 2026 should now have received a letter explaining how to apply for a school place. The letter includes our helpful booklet, Starting Reception, which provides guidance on children being school ready.

If you have not received your letter by 17 November 2025, please contact the School Admissions Team as soon as possible.

How can I apply and when is the deadline?

Parents and carers can apply via the application webpage and the deadline for applications is Thursday 15 January 2026.

It's important to note that those applications that are late will only be considered after those made on time have been processed.

Do I still need to apply even if my child attends a nursery?

Most children start primary school in September after their fourth birthday, which means during their first school year, they will turn five-years-old.

If your child goes to a school nursery, you must also apply as there's no automatic transfer from nursery to primary school.

How many schools can I apply for?

To give you the best chance of being offered a place at one of your preferred schools, we recommend that you apply for up to three schools as you can provide reasons for your choices in your application.

When will I find out which primary school my child has got a place at?

If you apply online, you'll be emailed on Thursday 16 April 2026 informing you of your child's allocated place.

For those who applied using a paper application or late will receive a letter notifying you of your child's school place via second class post.

What does the Cabinet Member think?

Councillor Clare Besford, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: "Starting primary school is a major milestone in the life of a child, so I would urge parents and carers to make an early submission of their choice for the process to be as smooth as possible.

"We have a wide range of fantastic schools available right across Stockton-on-Tees and with up to three choices available, now is the time to take a look at school websites and prospectus or arrange visits to individual schools to help make the best choice for your child."
