Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council gives racism the red card

North East football legend Steve Howey will be joining forces with Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council to take a united stance against racism later this month.
The Council is supporting Show Racism the Red Card's annual 'Wear Red Day' with fundraising activities for staff, including a five-a-side football tournament and rounders.
The event on Friday, October 17 will be attended by Howey, whose distinguished playing career included spells at Newcastle United and Manchester City.
The Deputy Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Bob Cook, will also be in attendance.
And landmarks across the Borough will also be bathed in red for Wear Red Day, including Newport Bridge, Stockton Riverside and Stockton Town Centre, as part of the Council's memorial lighting scheme
Show Racism the Red Card is the UK's leading anti-racism educational charity, utilising the high-profile status of football and football players with the purpose of tackling racism in society.
Councillor Norma Stephenson, the Council's Cabinet Member for Access, Communities and Community Safety, said: "There's absolutely no room for any form of discrimination in our society, which is why we are always very proud to give our full support to Show Racism the Red Card's 'Wear Red Day'.
"The message from the Council is clear that there is absolutely no room for racism in our Borough and beyond.
"Friday is going to be a brilliant day and everyone in the Borough can get involved by wearing red. I would also encourage you to donate to Show Racism the Red Card if you are able to as they do a fantastic job tackling discrimination across the country."
Steve Howey said: "I have supported the Show Racism the Red Card campaign for almost 30 years, both during my playing career, and as an Ambassador for the charity following my retirement from the game. It has been brilliant to see the support for Wear Red Day grow over the last 11 years, especially as sadly, the anti-racism education work delivered by the organisation is needed now as much as it ever has been. It is fantastic that Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council are once again marking Wear Red Day and helping to raise essential funds. I am really looking forward to attending the celebration event and talking to representatives from the Council about the issues they are seeing in their local communities and hearing more about the Council's commitment to ensuring that Stockton-on-Tees is a place that stands up against racism, hatred and inequality."
