Apply for school transport

We provide school transport to pupils with special educational needs or a disability (SEND) and those who live a long distance from their nearest school.

Who is eligible for home to school transport?

Your child is eligible for school transport if:

  • they are under 8 and the nearest suitable school is more than 2 miles away from your home
  • they are between 8 and 16 and the nearest suitable schools is more than 3 miles away from your home
  • the route to the nearest school is unsafe
  • they cannot be expected to walk to school because of a mobility problem or health and safety issues related to special educational needs or a disability

The distance between your home and your child's school is measured using the nearest walking route.

We will only provide transport to the nearest suitable school to your home. If you would like your child to attend a different school, you are responsible for their home to school transport even if they have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Families on low incomes

If your child is entitled to free school meals or if you receive the maximum working tax credit, they are eligible for school transport if they are:

  • under 11 and the nearest suitable school is more than 2 miles away from your home
  • between 11 and 16 and their school is between 2 and 6 miles from your home, if there are not 3 or more suitable schools closer to home
  • between 11 and 16 and your nearest preferred school based on religion of belief is between 2 and 15 miles from your home
