The crematorium, on the former Blakeston School playing fields on Junction Road, is being built by Esh Construction on behalf of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council.

It will be a modern single-storey, state-of-the-art building with two service chapels as well as ample on-site car parking. The crematorium building will be surrounded by tranquil and attractive landscaped gardens of remembrance.

Councillor Mike Smith, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "Over the last six years 80 percent of bereaved families in the Borough opted for cremation rather than burial for their loved ones.

"By providing a local crematorium facility we can meet the needs of our bereaved families here in their own community.

"This will be a very impressive facility. Work to create the entrance has progressed well and now we look forward to seeing the building take shape."

Paul Redman, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: "We are excited to be working on this important civic project, which will cater for the needs of the residents in Stockton-on-Tees.

"Our highly experienced team will be showcasing their construction skills in the creation of service chapels, the tranquil gardens of remembrance and with the surrounding high-quality landscaping."
