Councillor Bob Cook, Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said: "Ray cared deeply about public service and worked tirelessly for residents across the Borough. My condolences go to his family and friends. He will be missed by everyone who knew him."

Ray was elected to Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council representing Labour from 2002 to 2005. He was then elected again in 2011 and served the Billingham North ward until his retirement in May 2015.

During his time with the Council he was a member of many different committees including the Adult Services and Health Select Committee, Children and Young People Select Committee and the Environment Select Committee from 2011 to 2015. He also served as a member of the Council's Planning Committee from 2012 to 2013.

His funeral will be held at 11am this Thursday 26 January, at Teesside Crematorium, St Bede's Chapel, Acklam Road, Middlesbrough, TS5 7HD. Friends and colleagues are asked to meet at the crematorium.
