Take a break and support Fairtrade in Stockton
Residents of the Borough and visitors to Stockton Town Centre are being invited to a special pop-up event on Wednesday 1 March to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight.
Stockton Fairtrade Borough Partnership are organising a 'Fairtrade Break', taking place between 12.30pm and 1.30pm in the town centre, where visitors can sample Fairtrade chocolate, nuts and other refreshments.
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council is supporting the event and marking Fairtrade Fortnight by changing the colour of the town centre and Riverside's special lighting to display the blue and green colours of the campaign.
Fairtrade Fortnight is a nationwide campaign that raises awareness and support for the farmers and workers who grow food in developing countries.
Maureen Rigg, Chair of the Stockton Fairtrade Borough Partnership, said: "Changing to Fairtrade tea, coffee, chocolate, nuts and biscuits for your break means farmers in poorer countries can have clean drinking water, schools for their children and food on their plates.
"When you have a Fairtrade break, why not take a photo and post it on the Fairtrade Stockton Facebook page? Or come along to the pop-up event on Wednesday and we'll take the photo for you."
Councillor Steve Nelson, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Access, Communities and Community Safety, said: "Stockton-on-Tees as a Borough is proud of its status as a Fairtrade Borough and our support of this campaign shows again our commitment to the Fairtrade principles.
"It is a movement that I would encourage everyone to learn more about and get behind supporting farmers in developing nations to be able to sell their products at a fair price so that they can support their families and build a brighter future."
