Big plans, bright future

May 2018

Wednesday 30 May 2018

Today I have the honour of meeting former Olympian and world record breaker Brendan Foster. He founded the Great Run Company, which is working in partnership with the Council in bringing the new Simplyhealth Great Tees 10k to Stockton Riverside on Saturday, September 8. The event is joined by the Great North CityGames Elite Mile race, which will feature a host of world class athletes. Having played such a big role in its organisation, Brendan can give advice on making the event a success, and getting as many people as possible involved.

Tomorrow I am looking forward to meeting the Leader of South Tyneside Council, Councillor Iain Malcolm. I believe it is important to keep in touch with neighbouring Councils and share any developments in our areas.

On Friday I will attend the Tees Valley Combined Authority Cabinet meeting after I have a weekly catch-up with the Tees Valley Council Leaders’ Group. The agenda includes an update on the Transforming Cities Fund, with a proportion of this used to improve transport links across our areas.

This week marks the return of Stockton Stages which will see an array of comedy and musical talent descend on the town centre. On Saturday, Stockton Town FC will receive a special homecoming after they made the final of the FA Vase competition. I will be delighted to attend a civic reception with the team at the Town Hall in celebration of their amazing achievement. I was asked to say a few words for a special video which will be aired at the reception.

For the remaining part of the weekend I will be spending time with my family.

I have some free time on Monday which I will use to catch up on important Council paperwork and to prepare for forthcoming meetings.

My diary on Tuesday presents a packed day of meetings. Richard McGuckin, the Council’s Director of Economic Growth and Development, will visit my office to update me on any new issues in his department. I will then meet Martin Waters, the Tees Valley Combined Authority's Head of Homes and Communities, for our weekly update. During the afternoon one of the political group leaders will meet with myself and Councillor Jim Beall, the Council’s Deputy Leader, for a catch-up.

On the evening I will attend a full governing body meeting at Billingham South Community Primary School.
