Big plans, bright future

June 2018

Wednesday 27 June 2018

This morning I met with Garry Cummings, the Council’s Director of Finance and Business Services, to get an update on procurement before I attend a meeting with the North East Procurement Organisation (NEPO) early next month.

NEPO work with local authorities and partners on major procurement projects and it was helpful to speak with Garry on our current position ahead of these talks.

I also visited the Three Brothers Brewing Company at Bowesfield Industrial Estate which is a local, family-run microbrewery. It was interesting to hear about their progress and their plans for the future.

Tomorrow I am really looking forward to attending the Armed Forces Day celebrations in Stockton. A particular highlight will be the Freedom Parade featuring soldiers from the Yorkshire Regiment marching down the High Street to celebrate their Freedom of the Borough. It’s very important that we take the time to recognise the sacrifices that have been made and continue to be made by our armed forces men and women, so I hope many of you can come down and take part on the day.

On Friday I have an early start as I travel down to Manchester for a seminar with the Association of Public Service Excellence (APSE). The future of affordable housing is the topic on the agenda, where a range of issues will be discussed including the use of brownfield sites and building specifications.

Over the weekend I am looking forward to spending time with my family and catching some of the World Cup knockout games on TV.

Back to work on Monday and there is a pre-agenda meeting of Cabinet in the Jim Cooke Conference Suite, where we will review a number of items before the full meeting in July.

I’ll then be travelling to Birmingham in preparation for the first full day of the Local Government Association (LGA) Annual Conference.

On Tuesday I’ll be spending a lot of time at the ICC venue to hear talks from colleagues across the country as we share best practice on delivering first class public services for our residents.
