Big plans, bright future

January 2018

Last night I attended a wonderful achievement ceremony in Billingham for young people in our care and care leavers. This event is always a great reminder of how important our corporate parenting role is and it was so rewarding to see the success of so many young people who have talents and skills aplenty. Congratulations to all those who were successful in their categories.

This morning began with an introductory meeting with Lieutenant Colonel Dougie Hutchinson, the new commanding officer for the 1st Regiment Royal Military Police.

As the Council’s current Armed Forces Champion it is my duty to ensure that the Council fulfils its commitments to support the local armed forces community – which includes veterans, serving military personnel, reservists, and their families. It was a good opportunity to inform Lieutenant Colonel Hutchinson about the work we are doing in Stockton-on-Tees and to update him on the progress we are making in achieving our military covenant aims.

Following that Richard Pratt, the Council’s Capital Programme and Project Manager, joined Deputy Leader, Councillor Jim Beall and I to review the final designs for the crematorium.

Later Beccy Brown joined me for a meeting with Pete Widlinski from Justice First, a Stockton-on-Tees charity which helps people refused asylum to re-engage with the legal process. It was an interesting meeting and good to hear about the work Pete and his colleagues are doing to raise awareness of asylum issues.

This afternoon I have a series of meetings including a members update from Cleveland Police. Full Council will meet in the evening where a posthumous honorary alderman title will be awarded to recognise the contribution former councillor Stephen Smailes made to the Borough.

On Friday I will join Tees Valley leaders for our regular meeting at Cavendish House. Back to work on Monday where I have a busy day of meetings including a Cabinet meeting of the Tees Valley Combined Authority, my regular update meeting with Neil Schneider, the Council’s Chief Executive as well as Cabinet pre agenda.
