Preston Park wins national heritage award

Preston Park Museum and Grounds has joined leading historic houses, museums and galleries in winning a national heritage award.

The hall and grounds has secured the Sandford Award for Heritage Education mark - joining previous winners including Hampton Court Palace, Brunel's SS Great Britain and Edinburgh Castle.

The award is independently judged and provides a quality-assured assessment of education programmes at heritage sites, museums, archives and collections across the British Isles.

Judges recognised Preston Park's education offering, which includes workshops covering a wide variety of subjects including the history of the Anglo-Saxons and the experience of life in Victorian schools.

One judge said it is "a large site with some excellent resources", and praised the "exemplary learning experience for schools and families facilitated by a dedicated and enthusiastic learning team".

They added that the sites' museum galleries are "excellently designed and cover aspects of history and life at different times that are very accessible for all ages."

Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: "Preston Park Museum and Grounds now joins a select group of heritage education providers to win this prestigious award.

"The learning team at Preston Park are passionate about providing an excellent learning experience for schools and families, facilitated through the museum's first class collections and it is all inspired by Stockton's maritime, industrial and social history.

"I am delighted that their work to develop and maintain the standard of excellence for learning outside the classroom has been recognised in such a big way."

The award ceremony to mark Preston Park's achievement will be held later this year.
