Most planning and building control applications are now submitted online. You can submit your planning application to Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council in one of the following ways.
Apply online
You can apply online through the Planning Portal website.
The benefits of applying online include:
- You can work on your application in draft before submission.
- Immediate delivery and acknowledgement.
- Savings on postage and printing costs.
- Online record of your completed applications.
Apply by email
If you wish to apply by email or in writing then you will need to fill in the correct planning form, these are available through the Planning Portal website.

Each planning application will need to provide a minimum level of information, to ensure we have everything we need your application will go through a checking process known a validation.

There are a number of validation checks that your application will need to pass in order to be complete. You can avoid your application being delayed by ensuring we have all the required information we need. Further guidance is provided below.
Fees
Planning application fees are set nationally by Government and depend upon the nature and type of your planning application. Details of charges can be found via the link below.

You can pay for your application online as part of the online application process through the Planning Portal, or alternatively you can chose the 'pay later' or 'cheque' option. In those cases your application will not be registered until we receive the full fee.
Alternative ways to pay include;
- By telephone: 01642 526022.
- By cheque: Made payable to Stockton Borough Council and include a covering letters stating the application reference number and the address the payment relates to.
- In person: Visit the Customer Service Centre based in Stockton Central Library.

Redacting of information
In order to comply with Data Protection Legislation, there is certain personal information contained within planning and building control documents that, prior to being published on the Councils Public Access system, must be concealed. This process is known as redacting.
