Help and support is available to enable you to make informed decisions about saving energy and reducing the cost of heating and lighting your home. Advice is online but there is local help available if you prefer a more personal touch.
Saving energy could involve simple changes such as switching unnecessary appliances off from standby, to using energy saving light bulbs or larger scale improvements such as home insulation or installing a new gas central heating boiler; a modern ‘A’ rated boiler can save a typical family home £300 per year on their gas bill.
Financial support is available for a variety of improvement works from the Government and energy suppliers, including help towards replacement boilers and insulation. Some of the financial support is only available to householders in receipt of qualifying benefits for others schemes it is limited to home owners.

Increasingly renewable energy is an option for homes across the Borough. The most common are solar panels, also known as photo-voltaic panels which generate electricity for your home from the sun. There are grants and schemes available to support the cost of installing domestic renewables and a good starting point is the Energy Saving Trust website or telephone the Energy Saving Trust Advice Service on 0300 123 1234.
Switching Tariff or Energy Supplier
Making sure that you are getting the best deal on your gas and electricity is another way of potentially saving money. Typically the best deals for customers who can pay each month by direct debit but you may still get a more competitive deal even if you are on a pre-payment meter. For customers on pre-payment meters you are entitled to switch provider as long as you are not in debt to your existing supplier by £500 or more.
