Health Protection

Public Health is responsible for protecting the health of the population from communicable diseases, outbreaks and incidents through providing expert advice and support.

The North East Health Protection Team at Public Health England supports local authorities in providing this service and is available 24/7. The Health Protection Team will respond to queries from professionals and members of the public and offers advice and support on the identification, reporting and management of incidents and outbreaks.

Cases of COVID-19 within local settings should be reported using the links at the top of the page. For queries on all other communicable disease, please call the North East Health Protection Team on 0300 3038596 or 0191 2697714 (out of hours - for health professionals only).

COVID-19 Outbreak Prevention and Management

The Council's Public Health Team is responsible for the prevention and control of local cases of COVID-19. This includes prevention advice to the community, support for local settings (e.g. schools, workplaces, and social care), and management of outbreaks. This responsibility and work is shared with Public Health England and NHS Test and Trace. We have formed a partnership with Test and Trace to support the contact tracing of individual cases.
