What is the Towns Fund?

In September 2019 the Government invited over 100 towns from across the country to develop proposals for a Towns Deal as part of the £3.5 billion Towns Fund. This funding will help to increase economic growth with a focus on regeneration, improved transport, better broadband connectivity, skills and culture.

Thornaby is one of the towns eligible to bid for up to £25m from the Towns Fund pot with the opportunity to bid for more money from other national funding streams too.

More information on the scheme can be found in the Towns Fund Prospectus.

What's Next?

The Town Investment Plan is the first phase of Government’s Town Deal application process.  The Town Deal Board is working on this plan and has identified the following priorities:

  • Tackle long term vacant properties in town centre to enable new development and change of use
  • Support to enhance the delivery of skills training for Thornaby residents, linked to Stockton Riverside College’s strategic aims and objectives
  • New footpath and cycle infrastructure linking station, college, town centre and key residential areas and employment sites
  • Addressing poor quality housing in North Thornaby

Work is now taking place to develop a masterplan to address these priorities.
