The placing of tables and chairs (a street café) on the adopted highway (pavement) is now covered by The Business & Planning Act 2020, with a Pavement Licence being required. Further details can be found on our Pavement Licence page.

There is currently no license issued or fee for the placing of advertising boards or other displays on the adopted Highway within Stockton-on-Tees Borough.

Following a Council’s Scrutiny process a set of guidance will be produced for the placing of these temporary items of furniture by businesses which will be self-regulatory, with there being enforcement intervention when businesses do not follow the information set out in the guidance.

The sections relating to the placing of tables and chairs (a street café), have been replaced by the requirement for the Pavement Licence.
