The Non-Domestic Rates, or business rates, collected by local councils are the means by which businesses and others who occupy non-domestic properties make a contribution towards the cost of local services.

Under the business rates retention arrangements introduced from 1 April 2013, authorities keep a proportion of the business rates paid locally. This provides direct financial incentive for authorities to work with local businesses to create a favourable local environment for growth since authorities will benefit from growth in business rates revenues.

This money, together with revenue from council taxpayers, revenue support grant provided by the Government and certain other sums, is used to pay for the services provided by Stockton council and other local authorities in the Borough.

Further information about the business rates system can be found on the GOV.UK website.

Local Business Rates Discount Scheme

We have introduced a Local Business Rates Discount Scheme to encourage the take-up of vacant units in Stockton Town Centre. It provides assistance to support new businesses and growth to existing businesses that occupy empty premises within the scheme area.
