Good governance is an essential part of any organisation or business. Local Government provides vitally important services to its local communities and therefore is accountable and responsible for ensuring that it meets the highest standards and that governance arrangements are not only robust but seen to be robust.

At Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council our overall aim is to ensure that resources are directed in accordance with agreed policy and according to priorities, that there is sound and inclusive decision-making, with clear accountability for the use of resources, in order to achieve the desired outcomes for service users and communities.

Local authorities have a responsibility for long-term sustainability; economic, environmental and the wellbeing of its residents and wider communities. Effective governance is essential to achieving this long-term aim.
