June 2016

Today I have been in London for a meeting of the Children and Young People Board with the Local Government Association. Alongside councillors from across the country, we have responsibility to drive forward activity relating to the wellbeing of children and young people. The topics that we cover within this field of work are wide-ranging and include education and social care among other things.

Tomorrow we celebrate Armed Forces Day and it is an important chance for us to acknowledge the sacrifices made by so many people for our country. There is a day of activity planned on the High Street and I would encourage everyone to come along at some point and show your support.

There’ll be representatives there from a range of military and civilian support organisations and the World War Two re-enactment society will be attending along with several military vehicles. There’s a special outside service to give thanks to current servicemen and women as well as our veterans – accompanied by the Salvation Army Band.

On Friday I will be travelling to Cavendish House in Teesdale for a meeting of the Tees Valley Leaders and Mayors which precedes a board meeting of the Tees Valley Combined Authority. I’ll also be visiting the former SSI site in Redcar to get an update on the latest developments after the closure of the works there last year.

Over the weekend I am looking forward to spending time with my family and friends.

It was such a pleasure to see so many people lining the High Street and further afield out on the route as the British Cycling National Road Championships came to Stockton last week. The event was a phenomenal success and it was a fantastic platform through which to showcase the town of Stockton and the wider Borough to an international audience. Thank you to everyone who supported the event to everyone who worked so very hard behind the scenes to make it all possible.

On a different note, I’m sure I’m not alone in being incredibly disappointed at the dour showing by England in last Monday’s round of 16 match against Iceland. It was desperate stuff and a display without any credit which has left us in an unfortunately all too familiar position. Where the national side goes from here and under whose leadership is anybody’s guess but we can only hope for so much more from the national team in future.

Back to work on Monday and there is a pre-agenda meeting of Cabinet where we will review the items that are due to come before the full Cabinet next month.
