April 2016

Today I had an update meeting on the refurbishment of the Georgian Theatre. An extended Georgian Theatre would be another boost for the regenerated Stockton Town Centre and continue to attract some brilliant live acts while bringing in visitors to the Borough from further away.

In the afternoon I travelled across to Cavendish House in Teesdale for a meeting of the Tees Valley Unlimited Leadership Board. The board carries out some excellent partnership working much to the benefit of the area and it is something I am proud to be part of.

On Thursday I will be travelling up to Gateshead Civic Centre for an executive meeting of the North East Regional Employers’ Organisation. The organisation supports local authorities in a variety of fields and I always value an exchange of views at these meetings.

On Friday I will take the opportunity to catch up on some Council paperwork in the office.

Friday evening brings around a game that is monumental in terms of importance to Middlesbrough Football Club. The penultimate fixture of the season is a trip to St Andrews in Birmingham – a notoriously unhappy hunting ground among Boro fans.

Now is not the time for the faint of heart in footballing terms, with Boro locked on 87 points with both Burnley and Brighton. With a showdown with Brighton set for Saturday 7 May at the Riverside, this weekend’s fixtures will decide exactly what Boro need to achieve on the final day to secure promotion to the Premier League.

With the other two sides not playing until the afternoon of Monday’s bank holiday, I think it represents an opportunity for Boro to lay down a marker and pile the pressure on their rivals if they can win. Middlesbrough are unbeaten in games played on a Friday under Aitor Karanka – it would be superb for this record to continue for just one more game. Fingers crossed!

Over the long weekend I am looking forward to spending time with my family.
