Following the news that His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, has passed away, the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Mohammed Javed, has joined those paying tribute.

The Mayor said: “It is with great sadness that I express our profound condolences on the passing of the Duke of Edinburgh.

“He devoted his life to supporting Her Majesty The Queen and did so with the utmost dignity and dedication.

“He was hugely respected at home and around the globe and our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this moment.

“As a mark of respect, flags at Stockton’s Municipal Buildings and Town Hall will fly at half-mast during this period of national mourning.

“We will be sending a message of condolence to Her Majesty and the wider Royal Family on behalf of the people of the Borough.

“We will also provide details of how people can pay their respects locally in due course.”
