NEW traffic lights on a busy Billingham roundabout just off the A19 are set to be switched-on next week.
The lights, on the A689/A1185 Wolviston roundabout, are expected to go live on Tuesday (October 23).
They’re among a series of improvements designed to boost road capacity to keep pace with housing growth in the Wynyard area, where 1,100 new homes are planned.
Councillor Mike Smith, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “The new lights are fitted with sensors which gather traffic data and use it to synchronise the phasing so that traffic flows as efficiently as possible.
“They have undergone some testing this week in order to gather data at all times of day. This has led to some delays at peak times and we are really sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.
“On a more positive note, the data gathered during the testing will enable the new lights to get up to their maximum efficiency in a much shorter space of time. We’d really appreciate people’s patience and understanding in the meantime.
“We are a growing Borough and these kinds of improvements are needed to ensure we can keep traffic moving in the long-term, though we very much appreciate that they can cause some disruption in the short-term.”
