Paralympic hero Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson inspires pupils to be ‘whatever they dream’

GOLD-medal winning Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson visited pupils in Stockton-on-Tees in a bid to inspire the next generation.

During a special assembly at Rosebrook Primary School, she shared memories of her sporting career while letting the children handle some of her medals. 

She also explained her role as a peer in the House of Lords.

Pupils and teachers from St John the Baptist Primary School and North Shore Academy were invited to listen to her inspiring story in what was a packed assembly hall.

Dame Tanni, of Eaglescliffe, is one of Britain’s most successful Paralympic athletes with 11 gold medals, four silver and one bronze.

Born with spina bifida, she uses her experience and knowledge during debates in the House – having spoken on Disability Rights, Welfare Reform, and Sport.

“It was a delight to visit the pupils – they asked interesting and difficult questions,” said Tanni. “It was lovely to be able to share my experience of working in Sport and Parliament. The visit was thought provoking but I can honestly say it is easier to appear on Newsnight!”

Headteacher Eddie Huntington said: “For our children to have the chance to meet such a high profile and successful Paralympian and cross party politician is both inspirational and motivational. 

“With the high profile people we’ve had through our school doors this year, including poets, authors, senior politicians and athletes, they are beginning to realise that they truly can be whatever they dream.”

Dame Tanni’s visit was organised after Georgina Lewis, a teacher from Rosebrook, met her at the Teachers’ Institute at the Houses of Parliament where she was training to become a UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador.
