MORE options to personalise graves are being offered to bereaved families in Stockton-on-Tees.

Three new types of grave, each offering a varying level of personalisation, will be available in the new extension of Durham Road Cemetery.

The recommendations were approved by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet yesterday (Thursday 12 July) following a scrutiny review by the Council’s Place Select Committee.

Which grave options will be available?

There will be three distinct types of graves available: pure lawn graves, graves with a short personalisation collar, and graves with full personalisation collars.

The size of all grave spaces in the new extension will be increased to provide more privacy between graves and to accommodate larger and lengthier coffins.

What new personalisation options will be available?

The new options include:

  • Pure lawn graves - for those families who do not wish to place personal items, preferring to leave the grassed area clear and place flowers on or around the headstone.

  • Graves with a short personalisation collar - this option provides for a small collared area with white chippings placed within the surround, space for a headstone if desired, and a small number of personal items.

  • Graves with a full personalisation collar – this option includes a collared personalisation space, designed for families who prefer a larger area to place personal items, vases and potted plants.

How will these new options help families in the Borough?

Councillor Mike Smith, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We know that the personalisation of graves is a very sensitive and individual matter, so we have worked hard to provide greater choice to bereaved families in the Borough while also taking operational, maintenance, and access requirements for all cemetery users into consideration.

“The new extension at Durham Road Cemetery will provide separate areas for three distinct grave types and levels of personalisation. These options will give more flexibility for families to memorialise and tend the grave of their loved ones in their own way, without concerns of disturbance by items from neighbouring graves.”
