l and skills

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Learning and Skills service continue to be recognised as a ‘good’ provider of education by Ofsted in a new report.

The service offers a wide range of courses designed to help people increase their confidence and gain new skills and qualifications.

Courses include English, maths, ICT, personal development and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL).

It also provides employability programmes and apprenticeship opportunities.

What did the Ofsted report have to say?

Ofsted inspectors identified that “individuals, including those in the most disadvantaged wards, are able to learn new skills, increase their prospects of employment and improve their quality of life through learning and communicating with others.”

Leaders and managers have “maintained the service’s strong performance, as measured by the proportion of adults achieving their intended outcomes and qualifications.”

Staff at the service have also been credited with being “ambitious for their learners and their community.”

How does the service feel about its achievement?

Councillor Nigel Cooke, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing and Chair of the Learning and Skills Service governing body, said: “Everybody involved in the service is rightly pleased and proud at being commended by Ofsted in their report from which there are many positives to take.”

What can the service do to keep improving?

Staff recognise that apprentices aged 16 to 18 in particular need more assistance in achieving their qualifications. A dedicated manager has recently been appointed to focus on bringing about improved results for learners. They’ll also be working with employers who take on apprentices so they can help to review their progress and keep providing them with high quality opportunities.
