Stockton market is celebrating after being named the best large outdoor market in the country.
The National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) has handed the traditional market the prestigious accolade.
It has been bringing visitors to Stockton town centre for more than 700 years and boasts around 50 independent traders selling a large range of quality goods and fresh local produce from more than 100 stalls.
The judges were particularly impressed by the market’s events programme as well as the contribution young people from schools, colleges and youth organisations across the Borough make by turning into market traders to test their entrepreneurial ideas.
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing, Councillor Nigel Cooke, said: “We are delighted that NABMA has acknowledged our fantastic market traders alongside the events and school enterprise programmes.
“Stockton is a town with a strong markets heritage and we are very proud of its traditional market. Over the last few years popular events have also been running as part of the market to complement the stalls.
“We have also welcomed young people from schools across the Borough several times a year which has given them some ‘real-life’ experience of trading and an opportunity to test out some of their fantastic entrepreneurial ideas.
“If you haven’t visited the market for a while why not pop down and see for yourself all it has to offer?”
Chair of the Stockton BID, Janice Auton, said: “Stockton Market is a huge part of Stockton Town Centre, attracting hundreds of visitors each and every week and adding to the vibrancy of the town centre so we are really pleased to see it acknowledged on a national scale.”
Stockton Market takes place at the south end of Stockton High Street on a Wednesday and Saturday with a small selection of stalls also trading on a Friday.
