TRADITIONAL markets across Stockton-on-Tees will welcome a new generation of traders with the introduction of a new course.

In partnership with the Learning and Skills team, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council has developed the Market Traders Perfect Pitch for Retail course (Level 1).

The seven week scheme begins on Tuesday, September 11, from 6pm to 8pm at Stockton Business Centre, Brunswick Street.

An experienced market retailer will take the sessions, and on completion learners will have the chance to trade four weeks rent free at Stockton, Thornaby and Billingham markets. They will also have complimentary insurance for test trade.

Topics to be covered during the course include marketing, social media, customer service, trading regulations, as well as health and safety.

Councillor Nigel Cooke, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing, said: “We are very proud of our thriving markets in three locations across the Borough. They have been attracting visitors for over 700 years so it is important to train the next generation of entrepreneurs.

“We were delighted when Stockton won the ‘Best Large Outdoor Market’ title at this year’s Great British Market Awards, and are very proud of our large programme of specialist markets.

“If you are interested in trading as a career, this course will provide the necessary information, support and practical skills needed to make your dream a reality.”
