The restoration of Stockton’s Globe is under way and with its exciting new future as a live entertainment venue nearing, it’s time to make sure its past is not forgotten.
A Heritage Learning Officer is being recruited to lead a range of heritage activities and events about the Globe and the history of entertainment across the Tees Valley thanks to a grant towards the Globe restoration from the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund's Heritage Enterprise Programme.
The Globe has a rich heritage, in particular as a music venue where acts like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and the Bee-Gees once played and the Heritage Learning officer will ensure this is recognised throughout the redeveloped building and through numerous heritage themed activities which will continue for many years to come.
Among the thought provoking activities the Heritage Learning Officer will be responsible for are hard hat tours of the Globe, photography and oral history recording, a new heritage trail promoting Stockton as a music and dance town, exhibitions within the Globe as well as workshops, talks and much more.
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Norma Wilburn, said: “This has to be one of the best and most interesting jobs on offer across the region.  The Globe has a fascinating history and heritage is so important to preserve not just for today, but for future generations too.
“It is a fantastic opportunity to really get to know the Globe and its history, and most importantly to share this knowledge and experiences with people of all ages and backgrounds living across Stockton-on-Tees as well as visitors from other areas.
“The Globe’s future use as the largest live entertainment venue between Newcastle and Leeds may be set to put Stockton on the map, but its intriguing past plays an important role too.”
