PARENTS and carers with children due to start school in September 2018 are advised that applications for places are open now.

If your child was born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014, he or she will start primary school in September next year.

Parents and carers can make up to three school preferences in the application and there is no automatic transfer from nursery to primary school, meaning you must apply even if your child attends a school nursery.

Councillor Ann McCoy, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Starting at primary school is an important time in any child’s life and it is very important that parents and carers help to give them the best possible start by submitting an application immediately.

“Late applications run the risk of your child missing out on a place at their preferred school and can cause a lot of disappointment. I’d like to ask all parents and carers with a child due to start primary school next year to register an application with the Council’s School Admissions Team as soon as possible.”

The closing date for applications is 15 January 2018 and any submissions received after this date will be classed as late. Such applications will only be considered after places have been allocated to applications made on time.

A letter will be sent to parents and carers on 16 April 2018 informing them of the school that has been offered to their child. Those who apply online and selected to receive information via email will be informed in that way on the same day.

Anyone unhappy with their child’s allocated place has the right to appeal and forms need to be submitted by 31 May 2018, with any hearings taking place in June and July.

Your home address determines which schools are your ‘zone schools’ but every parent or carer has the right to express a preference for a place in any school, regardless of whether or not it is their admission zone school.

You can find out which are your admission zone schools online at or by using the Council’s [email protected] facility.
