A PERSONAL challenge to be cycling’s king of the mountain or a gentle ride with friends through rolling countryside – Stockton Sportive on Saturday 15 July is whatever you want it to be.
Set between Stockton Cycling Festival’s elite race days and family fun activities is this ever-popular event for recreational riders, with four routes on offer to suit participants of all abilities.
All routes depart from Stockton Riverside, with an escorted start in true ‘Tour De France’ style, before heading out into the breath-taking scenery of the North Yorkshire Moors.
Advance booking is advised due to the popularity of the four distance types on offer, which are:
- Spin – 36.7 miles – perfect for first time Sportive riders, recreational riders and people returning to cycling with no major climbs involved
- Sport – 50 miles – for progressing riders and cyclists with some experience as some significant climbs accompany the great scenery
- Challenge – 72 miles – this route heads deep into the North Yorkshire Moors and is a ride to remember featuring tough climbs and exhilarating descents
- Le Tour De Moor – 105.8 miles – as tough and rewarding as any race out there with mile after mile of glorious but challenging roads
Reuben Kench, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Director of Culture, Leisure and Events, said: “For those of us without the superhuman endurance of elite riders, but with a determination to get a bit fitter and ride more often, Stockton Sportive offers the challenge of climbs and views in the company of hundreds of other riders. Clear signage and welcome feeding stations help you round, whatever distance you choose, and the escorted ride out makes you feel like a pro.
“Now in its seventh year, the Stockton Sportive is a well-established part of the three day celebration of cycling that brings the country’s best riders and craziest bike stunts to Stockton Town Centre.
“Whether you’re a Sportive regular or a newcomer, sign up and set your personal target, I’m sure everyone who takes a part will get a real buzz when they cross the finish line.”
Entrants have until Wednesday 12 July to register their place at this year’s Sportive. There will be no entries on the day. Prices range from £15 to £25 depending on the distance chosen.
