Family fun day set for Stockton Town Centre

Thursday, May 18, 2017

STOCKTON Town Centre will come alive with fun for all the family as the town celebrates the annual Love Your Local Market campaign on Saturday 27 May.

Costumed characters, an extra-large ‘hook-a-duck’, and face painting will all be on offer as well market vouchers to be won to spend at the wide range of stalls at Stockton’s traditional market.

Starting at 10.30am, Daisy the Duck will be joined by a number of baby ducks in the fountain area of Stockton Town Centre to kick off a game of ‘hook-a-duck’. Each duck will be numbered and matched to a stall within the market; winners then go to the corresponding stall to collect a special prize and other goodies in a unique shopping bag.

Characters from children’s favourite TV shows and movies will also be making their way to the High Street and entertaining everyone as they go.

Jamie McCann, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Director of Community Services, said: “We’ve always been very keen to celebrate the Love Your Local Market campaign here in Stockton and we have a fantastic platform from which to do so thanks to our excellent historic traditional market right here on our doorstep.

“There’ll be plenty to see and do on the day, with activities to keep all ages busy and entertained, so I’d encourage everyone to come down to Stockton Town Centre and help us to recognise how great our local markets are.”

There will also be events taking place at Thornaby market on Thursday 18 May and at Billingham market on Friday 19 May and Monday 22 May. Special gazebos will be on site with free gifts and vouchers on offer to shoppers.

Love Your Local Market fortnight takes place between Wednesday 17 May and Wednesday 31 May and aims to raise the profile of markets, encourage start-up businesses and increase young people’s involvement in markets.

The Borough’s traditional markets have been bringing visitors into town centres for over 700 years and they’re located in Billingham, Stockton and Thornaby.
