STOCKTON Town Centre’s only independent bookshop is in the running for Independent Bookshop of the Year at the British Book Awards 2017.
DRAKE – The Bookshop, located on Silver Street, has made the regional shortlist of the awards where the winner will be selected by a panel of expert judges on Wednesday 15 March.
The regional winners will then vie for the ultimate accolade of Independent Bookshop of the Year in a special awards ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Monday 8 May.
And residents can boost the bookshop’s chances by filling in a simple online form to tell the judges exactly why they should scoop the prize.
By visiting www.thebookseller.com/british-book-awards/your-favourite-independent-bookshop, residents can express what their local bookshop means to them in a few sentences which will then be taken into consideration by the panel.
Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “It’s fantastic to hear that DRAKE – The Bookshop has been nominated for this award as it is such as an asset not only for Stockton Town Centre but for residents of the whole Borough and visitors from afar.
“The shop has come a long way since starting out in the Enterprise Arcade on the High Street, and since its move into bigger premises, it is great to see it going from strength to strength and become the latest in a string of town centre businesses to win awards recognition.
“The shop has such a welcoming atmosphere and the range of titles that they have available for all ages make it somewhere you simply must visit when you’re in the town centre.
“I’d encourage everyone to take a few minutes to visit the British Book Awards website and support their award nomination to recognise what a brilliant bookshop we have here on our doorstep.”
Richard Drake, owner of DRAKE – The Bookshop, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have been shortlisted. There are some fantastic bookshops in the area so to even have been considered is a huge compliment. It’s also another great shot in the arm for Stockton, on the back of the GB High Street Award and we would like to thanks all of our customers and friends as well as the Council for their support over the last 18 months.”
DRAKE – The Bookshop offers an eclectic selection of children’s books, general fiction and non-fiction as well as dedicated section for dyslexia-friendly reading and works by local authors.
