FOLLOWING the great success of last year’s Cycling Festival featuring the National Road Race Championships, Stockton is set for another thrilling event this year as we celebrate all things cycling between Friday 14 and Sunday 16 July.

Over the course of the three days, residents and visitors are invited to experience an amazing festival of sporting theatre, all taking place on two wheels.

2017 marks the arrival of the Stockton Extreme Bike Battle, a new addition to the Family Festival Day on Sunday 16 July. Come along to Stockton’s Riverside and watch as six of the best stunt riders in the UK battle it out with some major adrenalin-fuelled moves in pursuit of the ‘King of the Extreme Bike Battle’ crown!

Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “Last year’s festival was a national sporting spectacle that will live long in the memory and I know there are a great many people eagerly awaiting the return of the Stockton Cycling Festival for 2017.

“The new elements of the festival will add to the already stellar programme of competitions and activities on offer for cycling fans of all ages. With so much thrilling free action taking place right here on the doorstep, I’m looking forward to seeing Stockton jam packed across the weekend with families and groups of friends taking in another first class sporting occasion.”

Kicking off with exhilarating Town Centre racing on the evening of Friday 14 July, elite cyclists will race around a unique closed-road circuit to mark the start of the festival in style. The racing is free to watch and forms part of the British Cycling HSBC UK National Circuit series.

Saturday 15 July sees the Stockton Sportive take centre stage as cyclists of all abilities take on challenges ranging from 36 to 106 miles. All riders enjoy an escorted start in true ‘Tour de France’ style. With four race distances on offer, there’s a challenge to suit all levels of ability from complete newcomers right through to more experienced riders!

The Family Festival Day on Sunday 16 July brings everything to a spectacular close with the Stockton Grand Prix taking top billing. The UK’s best cycling teams and riders will arrive in style to compete in the elite road race, starting and finishing on Stockton’s Riverside. The teams and support cars will sweep through the villages in the north of the Borough before returning to a hectic sprint finish as riders vie for position nose to tail around the tight closing circuit.

The ever popular RideStockton also returns on Sunday 16 July offering a fun, family cycle ride that is open to everyone of all ages and abilities and is completely free to enter. This community cycle ride offers a great opportunity for people to experience the fun and freedom of cycling on traffic-free roads. There’ll also be a raft of exciting prizes to be won on the day – available only to those who take part!

All of the events on the Family Festival Day will centre around the event village on Stockton’s Riverside that will be packed with activities and entertainment for the whole family with refreshments also on-site.
