THE FIFTH Stockton Duathlon Festival saw over 800 competitors take part in this run-ride-run race around Stockton’s Riverside in a thrilling sporting occasion for the Borough yesterday (Sunday 23 April).
The participants were joined by a healthy crowd of spectators cheering on the elite athletes chasing their personal bests or qualification times, alongside the enthusiasts enjoying the fitness challenge of the various race distances.
The River Tees provided an inspiring setting for the Stockton Duathlon which was included in the 2017 British Triathlon Age-Group Major Events calendar. The event also acted as a qualifier for the European Duathlon Championships (Standard race) and World Duathlon Championships (Standard and Sprint race).
Councillor Norma Wilburn, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “It was another fantastic edition of the Stockton Duathlon Festival and it is wonderful to see it grow from strength to strength.
“It was also another amazing sporting event for Stockton, part of a first class programme of events that gives us an international reputation as an event Borough.
“If you were inspired by what you’ve seen at the Duathlon, keep an eye on the Council’s website for information about next year.”
The Duathlon was hosted by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council in partnership with TriHard and was supported by British Triathlon.
