Novelist and Mayor officially open independent bookshop in Stockton Town Centre

STOCKTON TOWN CENTRE’S first independent bookshop in over a century opened at the weekend.

DRAKE – The Bookshop has moved into premises on Silver Street after a successful first year of trading in the Enterprise Arcade.

The Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Ken Dixon and novelist Kit de Waal officially opened the shop on Saturday (8 October).

Kit de Waal is a former magistrate and her debut novel “My Name is Leon” was June’s BBC Radio 2 Book Club choice.

Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Ken Dixon, said: “DRAKE – The Bookshop is a great asset to the Town Centre and it is fantastic to see a business which started off in the Enterprise Arcade grow. 

“I really enjoyed being part of the celebrations on Saturday.  The shop has a wonderful, welcoming atmosphere and I encourage anyone visiting Stockton Town Centre to pop in – it is well worth a visit.”

Richard, Mel and Matthew, the family behind the award-winning bookshop, have been running DRAKE – The Bookshop since the end of September 2015.

They now have the opportunity to expand not only their stock but their opening times and ideas as well as create an after school tutoring centre for children from 5 to 16.

Richard Drake, said: "The Enterprise Arcade has been a brilliant platform for DRAKE - The Bookshop and the last year has really helped us establish our brand in Stockton, along with the support from B-Supplied. The Council have been incredibly supportive at every level, individually and collectively, they have been instrumental in where we are today."

The bookshop is the first independent new bookshop in the town since Dressers closed last century and has an eclectic selection of children’s books, general fiction and non-fiction as well as a dedicated section for Dyslexia friendly reading and local authors.

Drake – The Bookshop has coincided the launch of the new shop with the launch of Books are my Bag - a nationwide campaign to celebrate bookshops.  This collaboration between publishers, bookshops and authors is the biggest ever promotion of bookshops #bookshopday
