Taster sessions for Maths skills

Monday, May 16, 2016

DO YOU struggle to get to grips with numbers, equations and angles? A series of taster sessions in maths are being offered by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Learning and Skills service.

Learners will be equipped with the knowledge to approach maths problems, such as algebra, trigonometry and geometry, and the confidence to tackle them independently.

Held at Kiora Hall in Roseworth, the sessions take place on Tuesday afternoons (13, 20 and 27 June) from 1pm to 3pm. They are free of charge and learners do not need to bring anything as all materials will be provided.

Councillor Jim Beall, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Health, said: “It’s easy to forget the maths skills that we learned at school as we don’t tend to need geometry or algebra every day and smartphones and other devices have taken away the need for regular mental arithmetic, but confidence about maths and a basic grasp of things like geometry can help us with our home finances or DIY.

“It is always useful to be able to help others out with maths problems, especially our children or grandchildren when they need some extra help with their homework.

“Learners can expect to meet people in the same position, looking to enhance their understanding of maths, in a friendly environment under the guidance of experienced and welcoming tutors.”

Anyone wishing to further their maths skills will also have the opportunity to enrol on a new GCSE course starting in September or other maths qualifications.
