Stockton's own Diwali inspired event is making a return to the Borough on Wednesday 18 November.
The Festival of Light and Colour is a free event organised by Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council in association with representatives from the Hindu Cultural Society.
At 6pm the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Councillor Ian Dalgarno, will lead school children, community groups and students from Durham University in a lantern procession from Northshore over the Infinity Bridge and to the Rear Quadrangle on Durham University Queen’s Campus.
Following this the story of Diwali will be brought alive with performances from traditional Indian dancers, a Bhangra Community Dance led by Urban Kaos, and a Bhangra Disco with Sandeep Kapoor from Spice FM. Stockton Circus, a group of community circus performers, will also light up the night sky alongside a fire display by G2.
Visitors to the festival will then get the opportunity to buy delicious South Asian food cooked by Matty’s Bistro and enjoy the music beneath the evening sky.
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Norma Wilburn, said: “The Festival of Light and Colour is an exciting and engaging family event influenced by Hindu traditions and Indian culture.
“This year’s event takes the form of a procession featuring traditional dance, music and performances – and we are encouraging everyone to come and join us.
“Through the symbolism of light, dance, fire and food this event is a celebration of community integration and is a true reflection of culture in Stockton Borough. Kicking off at the Infinity Bridge and taking place in the Durham University Queen's Campus the event is completely free and guaranteed to light up your evening.”
Residents wishing to come along to the Festival of Light and Colour should park at the University of Durham car park and walk over the Infinity Bridge to Northshore.
Durham University, Catalyst, Urban Kaos and Element 1 CIC are also supporting the event.
