Stockton Town Centre became awash with red, white and blue on Friday evening and a special beacon was lit to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VE Day.
World War 2 veteran, 91 year old Jack Chapman from Fairfield lit the beacon on the High Street.
The street lights, river and fountain were also illuminated in the colours of the Union Jack.
Mayor of Stockton, Councillor Barbara Inman, joined in with the commemorations, she said: “The lighting of the beacon was a poignant way to remember this day, 70 years ago, when peace broke across Europe. I’m really pleased that two Stockton Borough veterans, Fred Lakelock and Jack Chapman, were able to participate in Friday evening’s event to help us remember and reflect on this important day in our history.”
Representatives from the Royal British Legion, local cadets and Armed Forces motorcycle riders also participated in the commemorations.
