Local sports people recognised

Sports clubs, coaches and volunteers across Stockton Borough were celebrated at a special awards evening on Friday, 13 February.

Now in their tenth year, the annual awards recognise the invaluable work and achievements of dedicated volunteers and coaches, not only for their own clubs but also for the wider community.

The Mayor of Stockton, Councillor Barbara Inman, and representatives of the category sponsors, presented the awards at Stockton Town Football Club. All the nominations were made by members of the public in recognition of the huge commitments made to further sporting participation and achievements.

The winners and runners-up in each category are:

Volunteer of the Year
Winner - Terry Wilson (Stockton Rugby Club)
Runner up - Jane Robinson (Stockton West End FC)

Young Volunteer of the Year
Winner - Alex Moriarty (Billingham Rugby Club)
Runner up - Aidan Bowler (Stockton Wheelers Cycling Club)

Coach of the Year
Winner - Joe Glynn (Thornaby Pavilion Judo Club)
Runner up - Clem Laidler (Stockton Amateur Swimming Club)

Community Sports Coach Award
Winner - Carina Peebles (Thornaby Swimming Club)
Runner up - Michael Atkinson (SNAPS Goals)

Club of the Year
Winner - Stockton Wheelers Cycling Club
Runner up - Yarm Tennis Club

Special Recognition Award
Zi Shiying - Tang Soo Do

Team of the Year
Winner - Stockton Town FC First Team
Runner up - Stockton Rams Basketball

Contribution to Sport Award
Winner - Peter Crawford (North of England Gymnastics Association)
Runner up - Alan Bowman (Stockton Amateur Swimming Club)

Councillor Ken Dixon, Stockton Council's Cabinet Members for Arts, Culture and Leisure, said: "Many people across the Borough devote a huge amount of time to support their sporting clubs and communities.

"The Club, Coach and Volunteer awards are a wonderful way to show real appreciation for all the hard work and dedication people give year-round. Congratulations to everyone recognised in the Awards."
