Stockton Council is calling on residents and visitors to show their love for Stockton Borough’s markets as part of a national campaign – and in return they may find themselves receiving a special thank you from the traders.
‘Love Your Local Market’ is a national, two-week long campaign running from 14-28 May 2014. Thousands of events will be taking place around the country in what promises to be the biggest markets’ event for a generation. Billingham will be holding its market on Monday and Friday whilst Thornaby Market will be taking place on Thursday too. Traders at both Billingham and Thornaby Markets be celebrating ‘Love Your Local Market Fortnight’ by decorating their stalls with bunting, balloons and giving away badges.
Meanwhile unsuspecting shoppers at Stockton’s traditional market may find themselves the recipient of a ‘random act of kindness’ as part of the ‘Love Your Local Market’ celebrations. The ‘random acts of kindness’ will take place from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday 28 May as a thank you to those who support Stockton’s 700 year old traditional market throughout the year and will come in many different forms from a free bunch of bananas, a cup of tea, or even a meal for two.
During the event Rediscover Stockton teams will be asking visitors and shoppers to complete a questionnaire about their market related shopping habits and in return shoppers will receive a free ‘Love Your Local Market’ hessian bag for life.
Stockton Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, Councillor Mike Smith, said: "Stockton is a town with a strong markets heritage and that’s why we are further developing what our markets offer through both the traditional market and our extensive programme of specialist markets.
“As part of Stockton Town Centre’s transformation the iconic 700-year-old traditional market has been relocated to the heart of the town, south of the town hall, and each of the stall holders is set to receive new canopies later this year, adding the finishing touch to the new look market.
"Whatever it is you’re looking for – you’re likely to find it on one of Stockton Borough’s bustling markets so why not make a visit during ‘Love Your Local Market’ fortnight? Don’t miss out on the chance to celebrate your local market, support our traders and receive ‘a random act of kindness’.”
Also taking place during ‘Love Your Local Market’ fortnight is the Makers’ Market and Craft Fair in Stockton’s Parish Gardens. On Saturday 24 May there will be wide range of high quality artisan products on offer from 10am to 3pm, along with lovingly hand made cakes, textiles, jewellery and much more.
Stockton has a rich market heritage and currently boasts a traditional bustling market in the High Street on Wednesday and Saturday with a smaller market on a Friday plus a wide range of stalls within the Castlegate Centre’s Spencer Market Hall. To complement the traditional market there is an extensive programme of specialist markets run throughout the year offering something for everyone.
