cycling festival returns

Stockton Council’s unique Cycling Festival will return to the Borough for a fourth time – hot on the trail of the Tour de France’s Grand Depart from the North!

The Council has once again partnered with British Cycling and Velo29 to bring national elite racing, safe family rides, stunts, displays and challenges to Stockton from Friday 11 July to Sunday 13 July, just a week after the famous international race sets off from Yorkshire.

Stockton Cycling Festival will be offering a weekend of exciting cycling events, from professional racing to sportives, and interactive activities, to family fun cycle rides. Whether you’re a cyclist or you simply want to come along and soak up the atmosphere, there will be something for everyone to enjoy during the three day event.

Watch the fast-paced Evening Town Centre Race spectacle on Friday evening, sign up to the Sportive for Saturday and enjoy taking part in action-packed activities, the family ride or watching professional races on Sunday.

For the first time since its launch, the Cycling Festival will also be bringing StreetVelodrome to the event. Part of a televised series, this pop-up track Olympic style track race brings the thrill of fast-paced cycling to the Town Centre.

Councillor Ken Dixon, Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, said: “Stockton Cycling Festival presents a unique opportunity for anyone interested in cycling to take part in and experience the lively atmosphere of this exciting family event.

“The Cycling Festival is bigger than ever this year with the addition of the StreetVelodrome. The Tour De France coming to the North of England for the first time will add to the excitement and energy prior to the event. The diverse range of bike-related activities means people of all ages and abilities can be a part of the action and enjoy a fun weekend with friends and family.”

The weekend kicks off with a fast and thrilling opening race on Friday 11 July. Watch elite cyclists sprint through Stockton on the Evening Town Centre Race route as they take on a mix of long straight sections and demanding tight corners.

Join hundreds of riders at the Riverside for the Velo29-Altura Endeavour Sportive on Saturday 12 July. With five routes of varying gradients and distances to choose from, the Sportive is ideal for anyone who likes to cycle and is up for a fun and friendly recreational ride, starting in Stockton and leading riders into the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors.

There’s a race for every ability, whether you’re a first time rider or an experienced cyclist looking for a new challenge. Sign up today for the route of your choice via www.stockton.gov.uk/cyclingfestivalsportive

Sunday 13 July brings a day of exciting family activities and events to the festival. The Event Village promises a packed day of fun, from top level racing in the Stockton Grand Prix, to exhilarating stunts and demos, the awesome StreetVelodrome, and a family fun cycle ride on specially closed roads.

Bring your bikes and join other families for the exciting official start of the family ride at 1pm alongside the Stockton Grand Prix elite race, team up with a friend to take part in the timed Rollapaluza bike challenge, or enjoy a leisurely bite to eat in the Village café. Whatever you choose to do, if it’s about cycling, it will be found in Stockton and it’s a guaranteed fun and free day for all.
