Rapid response group offers support to Direct Line staff

Friday, September 07, 2012

Stockton Council's Chief Executive Neil Schneider is to chair a co-ordinated group of partners following the news Direct Line is to shut its call centre in Thornaby with the loss of 530 jobs.

The task group will include representatives from Direct Line, Tees Valley Unlimited, Job Centre Plus, Stockton Riverside College, North East Chamber of Commerce and the Skills Funding Agency.

Neil Schneider said: "The announcement this week was devastating for the employees of Direct Line as well as their families.

"We will be meeting shortly to look at ways we can work together to support those affected and help them find alternative employment.

"It is very early stages but a number of other potential employers have been in touch to offer support and we will be doing everything we can to explore different opportunities."
