The expansion of Stockton’s Spencer Market Hall located at Castlegate Shopping Centre is now well underway with works expected to be complete by the turn of the year. The regeneration is part of a £1.5 million cash injection used to expand the retail space to 3500 sq ft that will house up to 25 new retailers.

The first phase of the Market Hall regeneration is now complete featuring a new-look entrance, which recently opened. The opening comes in time for shoppers wanting to get ahead of the Christmas rush looking to pick up something special and unique, while enjoying the opportunity to browse through the choice of stalls or simply relax with a coffee and cake at Café Express.

The development of Spencer Market Hall will deliver huge benefits to Stockton’s on-going £20 million programme to regenerate the high street. This will include expansion opportunities for local businesses to create a better shopping environment for visitors and an improved experience for both retailers and customers.

Karen Eve, Centre Manager of Castlegate Shopping Centre, believes that the new Market Hall will be a positive change for the local community who have been loyal customers for almost 40 years.

She said: “ We listened to what our customers and tenants want and are very excited. These are challenging times for retail getting the plans right now will seal the shopping centre’s future ”.

“We are proud of our growth plans and delighted the improvements will have such a positive contribution towards the regeneration of Stockton Town Centre. We firmly see the Castlegate as being the heart of Stockton and Spencer Market is the heart of Castlegate for the next 40 years ”.

Well-loved existing tenants including Marley’s Butchers, Carly’s Deli and Peacocks Greengrocers have already agreed to be part of the new Market Hall.

Dennis Marley of Marley’s Butchers said: “Our business has been in Castlegate for over 39 years and throughout that time we’ve chopped and changed to meet the needs of our customers.
“ We have agreed to a new bigger shop as part of the re-development of the Spencer Market Hall. Marley’s Butchers is a family business set to grow and improve over the years to come. The market hall offers our business an environment that is new, fresh and clean. It will also provide customers’ with a vibrant place to shop, find great local produce and meet friends.”
