Big plans, bright future

Major market hall redevelopment works at Castlegate Shopping Centre

Monday, April 30, 2012

Castlegate Shopping Centre has revealed plans for a £1.5m development of Spencer Market, with works starting on 23rd April 2012.

North East based contractors Robertson’s have been appointed as the managing contractor and will oversee the development to completion, estimated to be mid December 2012. The project will increase the size of the market hall by 60%, from 5,000sq ft to 8,000sq ft and will create new retail units available for lease by new businesses.

Development plans also include improvement works to the public toilets along with internal mall works and a full re-brand of the Centre.

The development of Spencer Market, funded by owners AG Lathe Castlegate Shopping Centre LLP will deliver huge benefits for the town including expansion opportunities for local businesses, a better retail offering to visitors and an improved experience for both retailers and shoppers. All of which are an important element.

Karen Eve, Centre Manager of Castlegate Shopping Centre said: “We have listened to what our customers and tenants want and we are very excited to be investing in the growth of Castlegate Shopping Centre and contributing towards the regeneration of Stockton Town Centre”.

“We firmly see Castlegate Shopping Centre as being the heart of Stockton and Spencer Market is the heart of Castlegate. The new market hall is a positive change for the local community, who have been loyal customers for many years.”

Well-loved existing tenants including Marley’s Butchers, Peacocks Greengrocers and Carly’s Deli have already agreed to be part of the new market hall. As part of the market hall redevelopment, the centre would like to encourage more local businesses to get in contact if they are interested in moving premises, growing their business or are looking for a suitable location.

The Spencer Hall refurbishment will further enhance and support the expansion of markets in Stockton Town Centre as well as contributing to Stockton Council’s on-going £20 million programme to regenerate Stockton High Street.

Stockton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, Councillor Mike Smith, said: “The ambitious and exciting Town Centre regeneration scheme strives to attract more businesses, shoppers and visitors to the High Street and that’s why we are keen to see all of the town’s markets continue to expand and develop.

“I’m sure the Castlegate Centre’s Spencer Hall refurbishment will help enhance the retail experience in Stockton Town Centre and support the creation of a flourishing retail centre with a first-class reputation for high quality independent shops, markets and world-class events.”

Businesses are encouraged to contact the Centre Management Office for details on tenancy opportunities. For more information contact Karen Eve on (01642) 672783.

Work will start on 23rd April and will see minimum disruption for shoppers and existing businesses within Castlegate Shopping Centre.
