Private Rented Housing

Striving to improve the health, safety and well-being of Stockton-on-Tees private sector housing residents.

On these pages you will find advice and information on all housing not owned by the council including private rented and owner occupied properties.

Through our work we hope to ensure that all housing within the private sector is in a good state of repair, is decent, and is safe for the occupants to live in.

If a property fails to meet certain standards, we can advise owner-occupiers, private landlords and tenants on their responsibilities and may resolve problems by means of information, advice and where appropriate enforcement action.

We also look to support owners to bring their empty homes back into use. Don't forget an empty home is a wasted source of income and housing.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council operates a scheme for landlords with rental properties in Stockton. The Scheme will recognise professionalism and good quality housing on offer to private tenants. If you are interested in working in partnership with Stockton Council visit our Landlord Accreditation Scheme page.

What we can do for you

  • Enforce standards in privately rented properties to ensure that properties are safe and healthy.
  • Provide information to landlords and tenants.
  • Provide help and assistance to homeowners who want to return their empty properties to residential use.
