Big plans for our places and open spaces

Meadow Rise (Hardwick Green)

The Meadow Rise redevelopment at Hardwick offers a great selection of homes. This fantastic scheme has seen an investment of almost £100 million from a variety of public and private sources.

Properties available

The growth of Meadow Rise started with the purchase and demolition of 600 properties to make way for this great new development. Barratt and Keepmoat Homes, our development partners, are building 780 new homes.

Over 80 properties have been made available for affordable rent, all owned and managed by North Star Housing Group..

An award winning £6m Extra Care scheme Aspen Gardens, with 50 units of accommodation, has also been built by North Star Housing Group.

In addition to this, North Star have also built over 55's apartments at Ruskin Court and a new supported housing development of 20 bungalows at Embleton Walk/Elwick Close.

Additional schemes

In addition to new homes, the following developments have taken place at Meadow Rise and the surrounding areas:

  • Hardwick Green Primary School, a £4m state-of-the- art primary school has been built
  • Installation of a multi-use games area and full-size football pitch at Hardwick Green park (formerly Pyramid Park)
  • Completion of new cycle paths, linking to Castle Eden Walkway National Cycle Route
  • Sustainable urban drainage system at Hardwick Dene, creating a natural wildlife habitat as well as performing a surface water drainage function for the new development and the wider Hardwick area
  • Traffic light junction on Harrowgate Lane and associated gateway landscaping
  • Improvement works to Durham Road roundabout
  • Provision of protected right turn at the Letch Lane junction
  • Improvements to Mile House junction
  • Contribution towards the Newham Grange Park master plan

The physical build of the properties at Meadow Rise was completed in early 2017.  There are still some remedial works to be completed along with outstanding roads and footpaths before the development is finished and can be adopted by the Council.
